Billionaire Candidates and Agricultural Ignorance

This is from a few years ago and is among my favorite images.  I find it interesting how the curiosity is strong on both sides of the fence.

Agriculture is something that is little appreciated by most people these days.  Social media has been completely crazy with how one of the current Presidential candidates gave a speech a few years ago to a group of highly educated, full-of-themselves individuals, in which he implied that it didn't take much intelligence to be in agriculture.  In fact, that speech (follow the link to see the article which includes the video) was given at about the same time the above image was taken.

The speech has been taken out of context in such a way that everyone in agriculture has gotten angry rather than thought about what was said.  Essentially, he indicated that civilization has evolved through time from what was, for most of history, an agrarian culture to an industrialized economy and now we are in the middle of a technology-based information economy.  He was correct, but his comments leave one wondering if he truly understands the amount of information and technology that are utilized in agriculture today.

Take that bunch of cows in the image above; they were from a registered herd of Angus that have been carefully selected for over 60 years to produce efficient, fertile, highly versatile animals that provide us with some of the highest quality meat in history.  Each animal is carefully measured in many ways, the data collected, collated and compared against their genetic scores which are developed from genomic testing.  They are rigorously selected based on stringent criteria so that only the best animals are allowed to produce breeding stock for future generations.

They are fed protein and mineral supplements that are carefully formulated to meet the nutritional requirements that the animals cannot attain from forage alone.  They are vaccinated to prevent disease.  They are cared for using scientifically-based methods that reduce the amount of stress to which they are subjected.  The forage they eat is also managed based on best scientifically proven practices.

That's just a small part of agriculture -- raising cattle on a ranch.  I won't even address what happens when they head up the production chain to eventual harvest and presentation in the meat case at your local supermarket.  Technology is everywhere.

When you look at farming it gets even crazier.  The tractors are guided by computers to precisely apply the correct amounts of seed, fertilizer, etc. based on satellite images.  The seeds which are planted are frequently the result of advanced breeding techniques -- including genetic manipulation to enhance disease, chemical and pest resistance.  We have more and better quality food than ever before in history -- thanks to the application of technology to agriculture -- and it costs virtually the same as it did 50+ years ago!

The candidate in question mentions the brainpower required to farm vs. work in a factory vs. create the technology which is so pervasive in society today.  I should introduce him to the rocket scientist I know who ranches in Arizona.  He truly is a rocket scientist -- used to work at NASA.  Or, maybe he should meet some of the scientists unraveling the genetic code which determines disease resistance.  Oh, wait, those are scientists.  Yep, I have worked with them most of my career.  They may be able to manipulate a gene, but most of them have no clue how their work impacts the real world.  They are isolated in their cocoon of technology of which they know much, but they don't know what to do with it much of the time.

I think, ultimately, that is the issue.  I call it intellectual snobbery.  It happens in every field of endeavor.  I've seen it in many, many scientific and engineering fields -- and I've seen it in agriculture.  It goes something like this: "If you don't have a PhD in blah, blah, blah, there is no way you can understand it.  You obviously don't have the intelligence to be able to comprehend it, or you would have a PhD in blah, blah, blah."  Sometimes it isn't just a PhD -- with Engineers it is simply a degree in Engineering -- and they have ranks.  I think Aerospace is at the top and Civil is at the bottom.  Each believes if you "aren't one of us, you ain't nothing."

Back to agriculture -- "If you try to learn how to ranch after a career in something else, you had better be prepared to fail."  "If you didn't grow up in it you will never be able to master it."  Those are incorrect too.

Getting back to the article:  I don't like the candidate mentioned in the article.  Period.  I think he would be worse for our country than most of the others.  Just look at the problems in his state and you should agree.  We shouldn't blast him for what was said, though.  Instead, we should realize that what he said is a symptom of something deeper.  The average person, or the self-proclaimed intellectual elite has no idea about what is involved in production agriculture.  Most of them don't even know what is necessary to get the food to their table.  Billionaire Presidential candidates probably have large staffs that take care of it for them anyway -- they don't even know their food comes from the grocery store -- let alone what it took to get it to the store.

If you don't like the candidate, talk about why you don't like the candidate; don't just blast him by taking his words out of context and failing to address the real issue -- ignorance.  Yep, brilliant people can be ignorant.  If you don't know about something, you are ignorant of that subject.  It doesn't mean you lack the gray matter to understand it given time and effort.  I wish all of the candidates would apply a little more of their gray matter to learning about food production.  Those in agriculture just don't add up to enough votes for it to make a difference to them -- at least in their mind.  We need to explain why it does matter.  Even billionaires won't live long without food.

Where Was Jesus Yesterday?

Yesterday, on the day in which we exercised our privilege and right to vote, I saw a meme on Facebook that said, "If Jesus was alive on this earth, where would he be; at a Trump rally or with the immigrant caravan?"  I didn't respond, although I really wanted to do so.

The meme was posted by someone of my acquaintance who has strong Liberal leanings and it was a jab at Christians.  This person appears (based on their posts) to believe Christians are right-wing extremists who tote Bibles and guns and think everyone should believe as they do.  It was intended to be provocative.  It is great that we live in a nation where free speech is still, for the most part, acceptable -- except of course on many college campuses.

The reality is that Jesus IS alive and on this earth and He was/is in both of those places.  He is in the hearts and minds -- and hopefully the actions -- of Christians everywhere.  The problem is that many Christians don't act the way non-believers think they should.  In fact, many don't act the way believers think they should.  I am first to admit that I don't always act the way I should!

I have seen outcry from Christians at the Red Cross providing food and water to those in the immigrant caravans.  Hmmm....isn't that what the Red Cross is supposed to do? -- help those in a crisis situation?  It should be Christians doing those things, not some NGO.

Should Christians be at a MAGA rally?  Absolutely!  Christians need to be engaged and involved in every aspect of the political process, humanitarian aid, caring for our own homeless, meeting the needs of the poor and downtrodden, in the halls of businesses both large and small, in the classroom as teachers and professors, in elected office and every other aspect of life on this planet.

We sometimes confuse Christianity and patriotism.  I get a lump in my throat every time I see the flag of our country flying and the Star Spangled Banner being played -- and nothing does it faster than the colors flying from horseback at a rodeo.  I have the deepest respect for our Veterans and both their service and sacrifice for our freedoms.  I believe that we do not have a sovereign country unless we control our borders.  Illegal immigration is still illegal.  There are those who call for open borders.  Such a policy would be the end of our country.  The long term result would be the loss of freedom for all -- both those already living here and the newly arrived.  Evil flows to and attacks weakness.  (Don't be confused by the strength that comes from Jesus in our own personal weakness -- that is strength.)

Our country has changed and the pace of change is accelerating.  We are seeing many young voters who hold radically different values from their parents and grandparents.  They will accelerate change.

One thing that stands out to me as I view the election results is the difference between rural and urban voters.  Rural America leaned strongly Republican while Urban and Suburban America leaned strongly Democrat (with the exception of Iowa corn and soybean farmers who have been affected by the trade war with China).  Why is that?  There are poor in the country as well as in the city.  There is racial diversity in the country as well as in the city.  One pundit last night kept referring to women voters in the suburbs.  I wonder if he realizes there are women voters in the country and the city too?

Many in the cities believe that rural voters are ignorant, backward, uneducated Christians (in this sense they use it as a derogatory word.)  Many in rural areas see people in the cities as ignorant, arrogant and rude.  We need to figure out the root of our differences and find ways to overcome them.  Until we do, we face the danger of further division.

The answer though, is to make certain that Jesus is in all of those places - both in the cities, in the suburbs and in rural America -- and not in name only, it must be in the actions of those who claim to follow Him.  He is the answer -- and He is marching with the immigrants and He is at the Trump MAGA rallies and He is even in the deserts of the Middle East reaching out to the hearts of terrorists.

An Election -- Go Vote!

Today is an important day in the exercise of our rights within the political system of this country.  Today we have the opportunity to cast our ballot for the candidates we each feel will best represent our interests.  In some ways it is a referendum on past behavior of certain candidates and their affiliates but, more importantly, it is an act of faith that the system will enable those who are most capable of representing us the opportunity to do so for a time.

It is extremely difficult for the average person to see through the smokescreen of political rhetoric and malignment of character that is common to elections.  We have been bombarded by political advertisements and biased commentary by so-called neutral media for many months in an attempt to sway our votes to the candidates who seek offices.  How can one know what is true and what is untrue in such an environment?

Many voters are "single issue" voters.  Their voting preference is based on one or two key issues such as abortion, same-sex rights, immigration, or some other "hot button" topic.  I have heard and seen many Christians take the stance that no candidate who opposes the "right to life of the unborn" should receive the vote of a Christian.  I understand that position, but I also know that no candidate is perfect and in God's eyes, one sin is no different than another.  His Word is quite clear that "none is righteous, no, not one."  It is incumbent on each of us to form an opinion on things that are important and to look at the record as well as the rhetoric of each candidate and essentially, tally the check marks in each column (weighted possibly based on importance to you) and make choices based on the sum of those marks, rather than using a single litmus test as the point of decision.

At times I wonder if it is in the best interest of all to encourage those who are not well informed to stay home and not vote but, the reality is that no one is truly informed.  If that were the case, I would not vote because no one knows the heart of the candidates, or how they will behave in the future except God.

When it comes down to it, we must trust God for the results.  I would encourage each of you to pray for enlightenment as you cast your ballot and pray that God will allow those individuals whom He would choose to attain the offices they seek.

The Cruz Tour

Senator Ted Cruz stopped by our small town for a visit yesterday.  He was here for almost 3 hours.  He gave a very brief speech regarding priorities and progress and then spent the majority of the time fielding and answering questions.  Most of the questions were predictable and fit well into the narrative that he wished to develop.

In his address he mentioned that one of the top priorities was unfinished business -- healthcare reform.  I am gratified for that acknowledgement since it is my #1 issue with Washington.  It has been for a number of years and will continue to be until fixed.

My wife and I are both self-employed and therefore do not fall under some corporate insurance policy as most citizens do.  We must provide our own insurance -- full price with no "partial or full premium payment" as part of some corporate benefits package.  For the minimum qualified plan under ObamaCare our premium is over $1,200 per month.  It comes out over $15,000 per year.  Neither of us have had any health issues and only see a doctor once every few years for something minor.

At least that was the case prior to this year when I had a minor emergency with chemical burns to my eyes.  When I was checked into the Emergency Room we were asked what insurance coverage we had.  Our answer was none, but we will pay as we go.

After treatment which took a couple of hours, we tried to pay on the way out the door but, were told they would send us a bill.  When it arrived it had a 60% discount for paying by check or credit card as opposed to filing insurance.

I was impressed with Senator Cruz.  He is a good speaker and willing to engage his constituents.  I believe he represents the interests of the citizens of Texas quite well.  His opponent in this year's campaign has moved about as far left as possible.  He will appeal to a portion of the voters, but I hope the majority will see him for what he is -- a left-wing extremist who would do away with borders and the rule of law.

Discernment

discernment - 1 : the quality of being able to grasp and comprehend what is obscure
(Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary)

"They are a nation without sense, there is no discernment in them." __Deuteronomy 32:28

How do you know when someone is lying? How can you cut through the fog and see what lies beneath the words? When listening to a skilled liar, the only way to know is through the gift of discernment. It is a gift. Not everyone has it. It is something for which one should pray. It is desperately needed by each and every voter in the upcoming election.

"Arrogant lips are unsuited to a fool— how much worse lying lips to a ruler!" __Proverbs 17:7

Get Out the Military Vote

U.S. Senator John Cornyn has developed a new website to help our military to be able to vote in the upcoming Presidential election. It is a portal to important information and critical dates to ensure that their vote will count. Please get the word out to any military personnel that may have questions about their voting rights. It can be accessed at www.texasmilitaryvote.com.

Stalemate

Congress has come to a standstill
And that's a good thing for us.
'Cause if they can't pass any bills
There will be less for us to cuss.

If they can maintain the status quo
In which nothing ever gets passed,
We the people might soon decide
That we don't feel quite so harassed

And will grant a more favorable rating.
They don't seem to get the message
That the best thing to do is nothing.
Instead of trying for passage

Of bills we the people deplore.
If by some quirk of the numbers
A bill makes it to the President
He might just make use of his powers

And veto it. And that is to our advantage.
So, as we look toward the next election date
For the office of President we need to consider
Our best result might be to maintain the stalemate.

To Fred Thompson

To Senator Thompson,
It’s time for your run.
We need a big change
And we think you’re the one.

The people are calling
For someone to lead;
Another politician
Is not what we need.

We want someone to stand up
For things that are right;
A candidate willing
To put up a fight.

The people are saying
Make borders secure;
Don’t keep dishing
The same old manure.

The war in Iraq
Is something to win;
Not something to cut
And run from again.

Marriage is made for
One woman, one man;
Same sex union
Is something to ban.

Abortion is murder
And that’s a cold fact.
It’s time to outlaw it
Through some legal act.

Social Security is shaky
And needs overhaul
We don’t want our grand kids
Left holding that ball.

Trim out the pork
From each spending bill
Then cut our taxes
And give us a thrill.

Health care is also
In need of redress
So start with correcting
The insurance mess.

We want to see courts
Which are led by good men
Who will rule with discernment
And wisdom again.

We’re tired of the partisan
Political game.
We want to see statesmen
Not those who inflame.

It is a high calling
To lead this great land;
It takes a great man
Who’s willing to stand

And be honest with us
About his belief.
But such a great man
Would be a relief.

We love this country
And know that it’s great.
We’re looking to you, Fred
For a win in oh-eight.

One Step Closer

We've been waiting for this...

Thompson Forms Presidential Committee

Jun 1 02:26 PM US/Eastern
By LIZ SIDOTI
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican Fred Thompson took the first formal step toward a widely expected bid for the presidency, establishing a preliminary campaign committee on Friday.
The "testing the waters" committee allows Thompson—a former Tennessee senator and actor best known for his film and television roles, including as a prosecutor on NBC's "Law & Order"—to raise money, hire staff and gauge support without officially committing to a White House bid and without having to publicly disclose donations or expenditures.
The "Friends of Fred Thompson" committee was incorporated in papers filed with the state in Nashville, Tenn....(view complete article here)

Senator Thompson
It's about time!
We're happy that in accordance with LAW
You're getting the campaign in ORDER.
We like what we've heard about your position
Concerning our sovereign border.

Keep speaking plainly
We like that just fine!
Don't get caught in political speak
But tell right out what your platforms are
On the various issues at hand
Such as abortion, immigration and war.

We're tired of the way
This country has been run!
It's time for you to step forward
And lead with all of your skills.
Perhaps you can bring to an end
All of the pork barrel deals.

Please don't fall
Into political speak!
Let us know what your true values are
The people will think that it's great!
A refreshing campaign that's not stuck in the mud
Will get you elected in oh-eight!

We Are All in It Together, Clinton Says
Tuesday May 29, 4:41 pm ET
By Holly Ramer, Associated Press Writer

Clinton: Shared Prosperity Should Replace 'On Your Own' Society

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) -- Presidential hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton outlined a broad economic vision Tuesday, saying it's time to replace an "on your own" society with one based on shared responsibility and prosperity.

The Democratic senator said what the Bush administration touts as an ownership society really is an "on your own" society that has widened the gap between rich and poor.

"I prefer a 'we're all in it together' society," she said. "I believe our government can once again work for all Americans. It can promote the great American tradition of opportunity for all and special privileges for none."

That means pairing growth with fairness, she said, to ensure....(for complete article click here)

In an appeal to those who struggle

Through personal effort and responsibility
The liberality of the government
Is the answer given by the candidate.

Why is it that socialism holds such strong appeal
To the self-styled intellectual few
Who spend their lives living from the public dole
As politicians with a leftward view
Rather than earning an honest living?

It isn't as though they themselves are suffering
From poverty or discrimination.
In fact they are often wealthy from their
Fleecing of the people of this nation
By manipulating the power of their positions of trust.

Perhaps that is the reason for their economic theory.
By placing greater control of the wealth of our nation
In the hands of bureaucratic bumblers it is easier
For their skillful skimming inclination
To be exercised upon the people.

Calculating Voters

Very calculated...

Clinton, Obama vote 'no' on Iraq bill

By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Courting the anti-war constituency, Democratic presidential rivals
Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama both voted against legislation that pays for the
Iraq war but lacks a timeline for troop withdrawal.

"I fully support our troops" but...(for complete story click here)

In my mind that makes them
Traitors to our troops
Or perhaps at very least
Certified nincompoops.

I think if they could see past
The way the polls are phrased
They'd know that we the people
Are totally amazed
At their stupidity because
What we're really for
Is to win the peace
Just like we won the war.
I hope they keep this up and
They soon will know their fate
Because we the people
Will elect Thompson in Oh-eight!

Political Grease

It seems that almost everyone
Here in the blogging world
Is focused on the candidates
And what they stand for.
The trouble that I see is
They don't stand for anything
Except getting themselves elected
And spending other people's money.
And if they are elected
They'll keep on spending
Other people's money.
You'd think the folks with money
Would put a stop to it
'Cause everybody knows
When all is said and done
There won't be any money left
In the hands of the people
That earned it. And anymore
It doesn't seem to matter
Which party the candidate belongs to.
